Job Summary
Underwrite small groups, learn and understand actuarial model, provide medical education to sales staff, produce monthly reports, maintain medical underwriting files and forms.
Essential Functions
1. Review medical applications for small group insurance.
2. Evaluate financial risk of medical conditions and determine premium requirements for new and renewal groups.
3. Learn, understand and be able to generate all reports required in order to determine renewal rates on a monthly basis.
4. Provide sales representatives with requirements on medical follow-up information.
5. Assist sales representatives in obtaining medical follow-up information either through direct or indirect contact with applicants.
6. Verify sold rates/applicants match quoted.
7. Complete Group Input Form, and distribute internal paperwork.
8. Produce monthly report on underwriting activity including entering information into tracking model, calculating expected revenue and loss ratios.
9. Maintain, update, and expand medical underwriting questionnaires as needed.
10. Learn and understand the actuarial logic behind the premium rating model, make recommendations and assist the Manager of Underwriting in revising and updating the model.
11. Assist the Manger of Underwriting in compiling management reports.
12. Provide medical underwriting education to sales staff.
Qualifications
College degree. Good PC skills - Excel, in particular. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain paper files in good order. Prior group or individual insurance underwriting experience - preferred but not required. Working knowledge of medical terminology. Interest/aptitude in medical and financial risk analysis and assessment. Show initiative to solve problems as they arise.
Physical Qualifications
Must be able to work under pressure from deadlines and goals. Must be able to spend a large part of the day sitting at cube, desk or table.
